The Sony Reader Daily Edition is Sony’s next-generation Reader, adding 2GB memory (~1.6GB free for storage), a free 3G wireless connection to the Sony eBook Store and a 7″ (diagonal) touch-screen display. It’s now available for order in the US at $399, with occassional store-specific deal lowering that a little.
Update: The manual is now available online at the Sony site here – Thanks to igorsk at MobileRead for the pointer.
Features
Like it’s companions, the Sony Reader Pocket Edition and the Sony Reader Touch Edition, the Sony Reader Daily Edition allows you to carry hundred of eBooks at a time in a slim, lightweight device. This edition, however, adds to the features of the Touch (dictionary, annotation and searching) by combining them with the 7-inch display which allows a comfortable 2-page layout of content when in landscape mode.
- Free 3G wireless access – you can wirelessly browse, purchase and download content on the go. The free 3G mobile broadband network gives you access to the Reader Store from within most of the U.S.
- Read comfortably in either portrait or landscape orientation, making the experience very similar to that of a printed paperback book. In landscape mode the Reader Daily Edition allows for comfortable 2-page layout of content.
- Touch-screen allows the reader to turn pages with one touch, create annotations on the virtual keyboard or highlight text with the stylus pen
- Search for books or words using the virtual keyboard or simply double-tap a word on-screen to find its meaning in the built-in dictionary.
- Long battery life, allowing the Reader Daily Edition to display around 12000 continuous page turns from a single charge – enough for up to two and a half weeks of normal usage with the wireless switched off, or 7 days with it switched on.
- Easy to read 7″ E Ink® Vizplex™ paper-like screen has no backlight or flicker so you can read for hours – even in direct sunlight!
- Huge choice of new titles, bestsellers and classics to buy, borrow or download legally for free – You’re not tied to a single supplier!
- Supports a wide range of formats including EPUB (the new industry standard), PDF, Text, RTF and Word, in addition to Sony’s own BBeB (LRF) formats. (Edit: But not DRMed BBeB (LRX) formats, apparently, so if you have purchased books from the Sony Store in the past, you’ll need to re-download them in EPUB format)
- Automatically saves your place in each book as you switch from title to title, in addition to being able to store multiple bookmarks in multiple books
- View your stored eBooks by Author, Title or Date or by user-defined groups of Collections
- Switch between six adjustable font sizes as desired.

UK availability
I’m afraid that at present (2010-01-10) there’s no word about UK availability. It’s often possible to order from certain US sellers for international delivery (although the one I normally suggest, B&H Photo in New York are currently out of stock) but in this case it’s less clear cut than most. The reason for saying that is that the wireless capability almost certainly won’t work outside the US and even if it did, the only place it connects to is the Sony Store, which you can’t use unless you’ve got a US address/credit-card.
The only thing that I can add is that there are rumors that rolling the Sony Daily Edition out internationally is a priority for Sony, in order to counter the Kindle DX’s imminent international launch, but there’s no actual information to be found yet.

When is the PRS-900 going to be made available in the UK?
December 16th, 2009 at 9:55 am
There’s still no information, but not soon – Sony US doesn’t even know when the US deliveries will start. Their on-line store is still only saying “Pre-orders will ship Dec. 18 thru Jan. 8. Actual delivery date cannot be guaranteed”, while reports from physical stores suggest they’ve been told they’ll get a half-dozen or fewer to start with, with no information as to if they’re going to be demo models for the shop floor only, or ‘real’ models.
When they do start shipping, it should be possible to order via third-party stores, but the additional costs to start to add up.

Hi – although it’s not available in the UK, if I bought one in the US is there anything stopping me from using it in the UK? I know the wireless function wouldn’t work and I’d need to change the plug on the adaptor for a UK plug – but otherwise it would all be ok wouldn’t it?

Yes, it’d be fine – the only issue I can foresee would be that any dates would be displayed as mm/dd/yyyy, but that’s all!

Any new news on a UK release date for the Daily Edition?
March 21st, 2010 at 11:04 pm
Nothing, although it is available via sellers who ship internationally, e.g. B&H Photo (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/) but watch out for the associated import costs, which add up very quickly.

Still no news about a UK version, so the advice below remains, i.e. don’t expect the wireless to work outside the USA.

Any news on the availability of Sony Reader Daily Edition (PRS-900) in the UK?
September 25th, 2010 at 3:53 pm
Of course the US wireless version will work in the UK. Laptops can use wireless anywhere, can’t they? Now, a 3G signal might be different.

I have a PRS-900 that was bought in the US. But I cant register this product in UK, so I am unable to download any of the free titles. How can I download any eBooks for free without registering this?
November 22nd, 2011 at 11:10 pm
You should be able to register your device with the Adobe software for DRM’d ePubs, while it will read free ePubs with no problems – Experiment with some from the Baen Free Library, for instance.
